Franklin | Relish The Flavors Of The Season At Sojourner

Sojourner At Southall Farm & Inn

If you’ve wanted to check out Southall Farm & Inn without paying the hefty price tag of a two-night stay, I’ve got some great news! They are now inviting locals to experience its luxury amenities, including one of their four dining options, Sojourner.

Southall has four dining options: Mary Amelia, Southall’s signature restaurant, Sojourner, the pool bar, and in-room dining. Sojourner is the Inn’s casual, all-day restaurant where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily. Guests can enjoy a classic Tennessee breakfast complete with country ham and grits. For those who skipped breakfast and have spent the day exploring the property or enjoying a service in the spa, swing by Sojourner for a smoothie, craft cocktail, or even an afternoon sweet treat.

Since I had reservations for a honey tasting at the jammery, I decided to maximize my time on the property and enjoy lunch at Sojourner. This was my first time at Southall since I was a little girl. While it was a bittersweet moment, I was excited to see Paul Mishkin’s vision come to fruition. I was in absolute awe when I handed over my keys to the valet and entered the main building. The sweeping ceilings, exposed beams, and rocking chairs near the fireplace create this inviting, cozy, heartfelt atmosphere. And what farm would be complete without some decorative cowbells hung and adorning the space?

As we were ushered to our table for lunch, I was captivated by the lush garden scene wallpaper. Honestly, I stopped and stood still, examining every single detail. Obsessed. As I looked closer, I saw glimpses of Tennessee wildlife incorporated throughout the scene. While I don’t want to ruin it for you, catch a sneak peek below.

So who are the masterminds behind the culinary delights at Southall?

Many of you may know chef Tyler Brown. He was the former head chef of the Capitol Grille at the Hermitage Hotel. While the property was under construction, he created the Rambling, a multi-course feast set on the pastoral surroundings of Southall. This must be a dream come true for chef Brown as he’s incredibly keen on sourcing his food locally, and what better place to land than a 325-acre farm with fruit orchards, greenhouses, and an aquaculture program for striped bass? While he will be at the helm of  Mary Amelia’s, he collaborated with chef Andrew Klamar on the Sojourner menu. Chef Andrew Klamar was the executive sous chef at the Hermitage Hotel before he left to become the Chef de Cuisine at the Durham Hotel.

Naturally, before my visit, I had to scope out the menu and spotted an Apple Pancake on the breakfast menu. Even though I was there for lunch, I was holding out the slightest bit of hope that I could slide that in with my order, but that was an epic fail.

Knowing that we had the honey tasting shortly after lunch, we decided to split a bottle of wine and a few things off the menu. Our first dish was the Roasted Oysters. When eating oysters, people are divided- raw or cooked. I love a cooked oyster, and this dish did not disappoint. It was bright and flavorful, and I loved the crispy crumb topping—a great dish for two people to share.

Rarely will a burger be on a menu, and I not order it. My visit to Sojourner was no exception. Undoubtedly, chef Klamar is using only the best beef, Bear Creek Farms. While the burger was smaller than I expected, it was delicious. I loved the onion jam and Kenny’s Cheddar Cheese. The fries were excellent, too, crispy and salty.

After two savory dishes, I insisted we try one of the desserts on the menu. While the cookies and milk were a strong contender, we decided to try the Asian Pear Cobbler. I am a sucker for cobblers but have only enjoyed a classic peach or blackberry cobbler in the summer, so I was intrigued by the pear. Rather than the traditional cobbler topping, this dish was topped with what reminded me of mini biscuits topped with cinnamon and sugar. What cobbler would be complete without ice cream? Sojourner tops this dish with a Satsuma Gelato that’s made on the property. It was the perfect compliment.

You are in for a dose of genuine southern hospitality as soon as you enter Southall. From the lunch at Sojourner to the honey tasting at the jammery and even wandering the property, it was magical. While it won’t be a regular occurrence, let’s face it, it’s a haul to get there from Nashville, but it’s worth it. If you want to dine on the property, reservations are required, as you won’t be able to get through the entrance. Guests can dine at Sojourner or partake in one of the new Southall Suppers, which is a ticketed event. Whatever you choose, take a little time to grab a cocktail, sit by the fire and relax.

Tariff: Prices are currently not available on the sample menus. However, lunch entrees are priced between $10.00 and $22.00. Guests can partake in smoothies for $14.00, and desserts range between $12.00-$14.00. If you are interested in a craft cocktail, they start at $18.00 and go upwards of $22.00. An assortment of beer and wine is also available. Note: a 20% gratuity is added to all checks. Our lunch was approximately $200.00, for what I’ve shared here.

Can't Miss: Without a doubt, give the burger a shot. It’s mouthwatering, juicy, and downright delicious.

Potential Pass: The oysters were enjoyable, but next time I’d pass on these and try the pastrami, as it came highly recommended by our server.

Until Next Time!
