My summer has been quieter than planned. A torn meniscus has a way of narrowing your options. While my activities may be limited, my wine tasting is not. This week, we are sampling an interesting wine from Tuscany, 2024 Barbanera inBianco, a white Sangiovese.
Yes, White Sangiovese exists, and no, that’s not a typo. In fact, I did a double-take at Trader Joe’s. Sangiovese Bianco is a blanc de noir. It’s the same red grape behind Chianti and Brunello, but pressed immediately after harvest so the juice never sees the skins long enough to turn pink. What comes out on the other side is structurally a white wine, but the Sangiovese doesn’t fully disappear. It just arrives in a completely different package.
This isn't a bottle you stumble across at your neighborhood wine shop. Wines like this typically live behind a specialty importer or a serious Italian program, which made finding it at Trader Joe's feel like a minor miracle. The catch: it's not a guaranteed shelf staple. You may have to hunt, and I’d argue that’s half of the appeal.
Before I drink this entire bottle, let’s jump into the tasting details, shall we?
Tasting Notes:
Pale straw yellow hue
Notes and aromas of peach, quince, tart cherry, and orange with a slight herbaceous edge
Light to medium body with minimal tannins- nothing like you see in the red Sangiovese
Savory minerality
Fresh, bright, and zesty
Verdict:
If another bottle crosses my path, it’s going straight into the summer rotation. Light, savory, and just interesting enough to spark a conversation. After all, how often do you see a white Sangiovese? It easily earns its place on the table next to any cheese-and-charcuterie board. Grab it if you see it, and drop your thoughts in the comments!
Until Next Time!
