Since I’ve had significantly more time at home over the last two months, I’ve been focused on learning more about wine. It’s something that we all love to drink but sometimes we can let the fear of the unknown cloud our judgment. For instance, if you only drink Cabernet Sauvignon, you are likely to pick up a bottle of that when you find yourself staring at the stocked shelves at the wine store.

There are SO many grapes. Yes, some may be better than overs but they are all worth experiencing at least once. You never know, you might find a new favorite.

Since we unofficially kicked off” Drink the Rainbow” with National Chardonnay day, I wanted to continue sampling wines of the white variety.

Last week when I was at Trader Joe’s picking up a few essentials, and yes wine counts as an essential (always and forever), I spotted Overlake in the NEW NEW section. Since I didn’t have a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc chosen for our “drink the rainbow” theme, I thought this would be a perfect addition.

Overlake Sauvignon Blanc is produced in Lake County, California. For my geography gurus, Lake County is located north of Napa Valley ( about an hour if I’m not mistaken). This particular area is known for producing killer Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. You may have noticed that this bottle has a particularly young vintage. Unlike most grapes, Sauvignon Blanc grapes are best when enjoyed young.

Without geeking out too much on the wine detail, I poured myself a glass and began to put my palate to work! Below you will find some of my tasting notes:

TASTING NOTES:

  • Screwcap

  • Pale lemon color

  • Citrus on the nose, specifically grapefruit, lemon, and apricot

  • Crisp with the common “pucker” factor that you often find with Sauvignon Blancs

  • Refreshing; Solid mouthfeel

Verdict:  I didn’t pair this particular wine with any meats or cheeses. I simply enjoyed it as is. I am sure pairing with a fish dish or even a charcuterie board would help temper the acidity. However, I found this quite enjoyable and polished the bottle off without any problem. This bottle would be a great pool/patio sipper because it’s quite refreshing.

If you pick up a bottle, I’d love to hear what you think!

Until Next Time!
